Athletics Update - Basketball 10/9/2020
Recently, the Catholic Athletic League (CAL) board notified schools that it is their intention to begin Winter Sports/Basketball season sometime after the new year in January 2021. The plan is to facilitate an abbreviated basketball season for as many teams/divisions that are able to participate. CAL has requested that schools respond to a statewide survey to guage student interest and schools’ ability to participate & furnish gym space for practices and games. Currently, one of the largest concerns is that many schools (SJS included) have been pressed to utilize their gymnasiums for additional uses/as overflow due to the need to space students and programs out in compliance with social distancing regulations.
In order to determine interest and how many teams SJS might potentially register, Fr. Stowe has asked that parents in grades 3-8 respond to Amy Sisson, the Athletics Coordinator, with the name/grade of their child(ren) that are interested in participating in boys or girls basketball this winter season. Please respond to Amy at athletics@sjsww.org no later than Monday, October 12 if you would like your child to be represented in this survey.
Based on the responses CAL receives to their survey, the CAL board will determine how many divisions/teams can safely and feasibly participate based on the number of gyms available to schedule games in. At this time, it cannot be predicted or guaranteed if CAL will be able to offer the full program to all grade levels. SJS has indicated that we may be able to accommodate CAL in providing gym space for our teams to practice and for weekend games under specific conditions for break down/set up/sanitization of the tables for school use nightly and on Sundays as our gym is needed for before/after school care and classroom overflow during the week. In order for this to happen, it will be necessary to have a stable list of volunteers willing to commit to specific days/nights for break down/set up of the tables.
