After school Dismissal Change

8/24/2015

Picture
The after school dismissal procedure has changed. An email was sent home describing the procedure. All students (excluding pre-Kindergarten) will report to a dismissal room: each student going home on a bus will be assigned to go to a specific room, walkers will go to a specific classroom, and all students going home by motor vehicle will go to the gym.
  • Walkers (grade 4-8 students only) will be dismissed by the Intervale side doors. A faculty/staff member will escort your child across the street.  All students who are walking must have a parent permission slip. It is your choice as a parent where to meet your child along this path and how far they will walk. No walker will be dismissed to a vehicle parked in our school parking lot or one parked on Wakefield St. Walkers will be given first priority.
  • Bus riders will be escorted by a faculty/staff member through the Intervale St. side doors to the appropriate bus. The buses will be given second priority.
  • Riders will report to the gym. There they will need to sit and listen for their name to be called. When a student’s name is called he/she will walk to the gym foyer and wait for the cars to stop. Once the vehicles safely stop, they may enter the vehicle. If it is necessary for an adult to exit the vehicle to assist their child, please do so.
  • All adults who pick up students by motor vehicle must enter the parking lot, drive to the right around the parked cars, passing along the front of the building. In each vehicle, display the name of the child/children you are picking up.  A faculty/staff member will read name(s) on a walkie-talkie to prepare for those children to be waiting for you at the front of the gym. As your car approaches the front of the building, a faculty/staff member will direct you to form two lanes in front of the gym. All vehicles must exit to the right onto Intervale St.
  • Pre-Kindergarten riders will exit the primary wing doors. A staff member will escort the child out of the building. The adult driver should exit the vehicle to meet the staff member and sign the student out. This will be explained during the pre-Kindergarten orientation.
This change is the culmination of a series of discussions with school employees and the West Warwick Police Department.  This will be practiced during the day at SJS so that at 3:15 all students will be in place and ready.  The first two weeks are always busy, please be patient with us.  We will try this dismissal procedure, perhaps modify it along the way, and evaluate its effectiveness.
