Parents and Friends of SJS, National Catholic Schools Week is the annual celebration of Catholic education in the United States. It starts the last Sunday in January and runs all week, January 31 - February 6. The theme for the National Catholic Schools Week 2016 is “Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service.” Here, all students have the opportunity to learn about and experience the love of God. We are an inclusive community which welcomes and accepts all of our neighbors as sisters and brothers. SJS has a long history of guiding students through their early years by helping them to learn about God, the world, and themselves so that they can become the person God intends them to be. Catholic Schools Week is a celebration of Catholic Schools. RI Families of for School Choice will be holding a legislative reception for members of the General Assembly on January 28 at the State House for the purpose of advocating parents right of choice in education. Imagine what this could mean. Peace, Mr. Jim Woodmansee
We did many activities during Advent to prepare for Jesus’s coming.
Our manger was prepared with our many acts of kindness, through reconciliation and the help of Father Bob. As a school community, we had an old fashioned Christmas Carol sing-a-long and we learned about St. Nicholas and the traditional tales of old. We patiently waited to open the gifts of Christmas. We hope many of you continued to unwrap the joy of the Christmas season which ended on January 6th. Yesterday, the Christmas season concluded with the celebration of Epiphany, the feast of the Magi. During Mass, our sixth grade students followed the star to the Nativity scene and the gifts of the three wise men were revealed. Later in the day, our kindergarten class presented a celebration of "Peace throughout the world and the Light of Jesus". The Epiphany occurs on the twelfth day of Christmas. It's name means “manifestation” and it celebrates the day Jesus was revealed as the Son of God. When the magi adored the infant Jesus and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh, it was a sign that Jesus was sent as the Savior of all. On the third Sunday of Advent, families gather in St. Peter's Square in Italy. The Holy Father welcomes all and extending a blessing to the crowd and the Infant Jesus figures raised to him. Likewise, kindergartners fashioned Jesus figures from clay, set in a crib of straw and wool. Father Bob visited kindergarten speaking to them of the meaning of Christmas and blessing the Christ Child figures.
Congratulations to EagleStorm, our second Robotics Club team to qualify for the FLL State Championship! This team of 4th and 5th graders scored very well in all four aspects of competition at their qualifying tournament on Saturday. They were the youngest team there and earned 7th place out of 19 teams present, from all over Rhode Island. Our two teams, NovaShock and EagleStorm, will now go on to compete at the State Championship at Roger Williams University on January 16th. What a tremendous asset to our St. Joseph School science program! Check out the SJS Robotics page here: http://nbreault.weebly.com/sjs-robotics.html
Our little preschool scientists have been busy making predictions and honing their observation skills! Will candy canes dissolve faster in hot or cold water? In oil or vinegar? How long will it take them to melt?? Waiting is the most difficult part!
Grade 5 had so much fun studying simple machine in Science class today. With the help of principal Woodmansee, a maul, a wedge and a mallet, we learned how to split wood by using our hands and some simple tools. A good tool extends the power of your hand. Tools are all around us. A fork to whip in egg, a needle to sew a hole, and a hoe to mix sand and cement are all pretty amazing tools. Today we focused on splitting wood. We learned about effort and put-put the effort in arm resistance, the force of splitting wood. We determined that it’s easier to split wood with a maul instead of a mallet and a wedge. This is because of the better leverage because of the longer leverage effort arm, heavier head of this tool. “This made the lesson so much easier to understand than reading it out of a book.”-One student said. “Totally one of the best Science class yet!”-Another student stated. Social graces were demonstrated by our Kindergartners as we celebrated in the classroom a meal together. Our work on etiquette in preparation for the holiday included greeting our host; setting a complete table; seating ladies at a table; and serving food. Ambient lighting and dinner music provided the perfect backdrop for our thankful celebration. Congratulations!! SJS Robotics team NovaShock is one of ten teams going to the RI State Championship tournament on January 16th! Only ten of the 17 teams present at Saturday's qualifying tournament advanced, and NovaShock scored well enough in their Project Presentation, Core Values Interview, Robot Design Interview, and Robot Game Competition to secure one of the coveted spots. There's more information at the SJS Robotics webpage here: http://nbreault.weebly.com/sjs-robotics.html
Congratulations to team NovaShock! Our other team, EagleStorm, will have their qualifying tournament on December 12th. |
