BCI & Safe Environment
The BCI and Safe Environment (S.E.) process at St. Joseph School consists of three required steps: Safe Environment training, a Rhode Island BCI criminal background check, and a federal background check through AssureHire. All three requirements are mandated by the Diocese of Providence.
All adults who work or volunteer with children in any capacity at SJS are required to complete the BCI and Safe Environment process once every three years.
1. Safe Environment (S.E.) Training
Safe Environment Training helps ensure the safety and well-being of all our students while they are in our collective care. Adults must watch the Safe Environment training video or review the training slideshow as part of this requirement. The video is available on our website under the Safe Environment tab in the Parents section. Once the training has been completed, adults must sign off confirming that they have watched the entire training. There is no cost associated with the Safe Environment requirement.
2. Rhode Island BCI Check
A Rhode Island BCI criminal background check must be completed once every three years. St. Joseph School covers the cost of the BCI check. Please contact Mrs. Jessica Loffler at [email protected] for more information about completing this requirement.
3. Federal Background Check – AssureHire
A federal background check through AssureHire must also be completed once every three years. An online link will be sent directly to the email address you provide. Please use the link in the email to complete the background check.
All three steps must be completed before an adult may work or volunteer with students at St. Joseph School.
Renewal process

Safe Environment and BCI requirements must be renewed every three years. At the time of renewal, all required training materials, forms, and background checks must be completed again as outlined above.
Please complete all required steps and return the two completed forms to the school office. An AssureHire link for the federal background check will be sent to the email address on file. There is no cost to complete the renewal process. St. Joseph School covers the associated costs. |
