Learning Through Play

9/14/2015

Today in Mrs. Graham’s science class students used games to practice identifying the steps of Scientific Method.  In this lesson we learned that when we play games, like Genga, we ask ourselves QUESTIONS like "What piece should I remove that will leave the tower standing?" and then we form a HYPOTHESIS like "If I remove the middle piece, the tower will not fall". We test our hypothesis with each turn we take!  Did YOU know we practice the steps of Inquiry Science all the time, too?  What really made this lesson great is that while having fun, we used our new vocabulary terms.

In another lesson, students were faced with a challenge: to "Save Freddie" from drowning by getting a Life Saver around his midsection without dropping him into the ocean.  The challenging part was using only one tool- a large paper clip- and NO HANDS!  Everyone was surprisingly successful.  Ultimately, this was an exercise in problem solving, collaboration, patience, and teamwork.   Easy Peasy!
